Hindsight reveals the sixth-century as a pivotal period in the
history of Mediterranean artistic and architectural production, one
that was neither fully ancient nor completely medieval in its
aesthetic and cultural sensibilities. This course will examine
artistic and architectural production in sacred and secular contexts
around the Mediterranean world over the course of the century.
Monumental architecture and mosaic in centers such as
Constantinople, Rome, and Ravenna will be considered together with
smaller scale works such as manuscripts, panel paintings and ivory
carving from around the Mediterranean world in an effort to
understand the ways in which developments in art and architecture
both respond to and shape the concerns of contemporary society.
