This course is designed to provide an orientation to how public relations departments,
consultants and agencies contribute to the management of an unexpected issue that threaten
a company’s reputation and must be addressed with immediacy and clarity. Through the use
of case studies to illustrate how corporations have successfully, and unsuccessfully, managed
crisis situations students will be challenged to identify mistakes that were made and suggest
alternative solutions that may have produced a more acceptable outcome. Topics for
discussion will include how to establish a communication plan in advance, identification of
responsibilities and ways of interfacing with the media to provide credible and trusted
information.
