This course is intended to introduce students to the contemporary
literatures of the Middle East and help their appreciation of
different cultures, as well as familiarize them with some of the
academic concepts and methods of literary analysis. Drawing on
examples of contemporary literature translated from Arabic, Hebrew,
Persian and Turkish, the course will explore the issues which Middle
Eastern writers feel compelled to address. We will look at texts which
deal with the following themes in particular: the influence of the
West and the colonial experience; the place of the individual in
society; gender relations; war and peace.
