The purpose of this course is to provide pre-dissertation graduate
students with the practical information they need to move from the
essentially passive and subordinate role of a student to the role of
active researcher and member of the community of the discipline.
The course will deal with the following main areas:
1) basic reference materials, research tools, and methodologies in
Islamic studies;
2) the mechanics of carrying out a full-scale research project;
3) the functioning of the scholarly community, in particular Middle
East studies.
