Central East European Film is a course presenting major achievements
of national cinemas in the present-day countries of Poland, the Czech
Republic and Slovakia (the former Czechoslovakia), Hungary, Rumania,
Bulgaria, as well as Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia, and other South Slavic
countries (the former Yugoslavia). Special attention will be given to
the historical and sociopolitical context in which these cinemas
developed, as well as the transformations of themes and aesthetics
after the fall of communism in 1989. Contemporary films will be
discussed as part of American and world cinema today. There will be
two mandatory film screenings (with English subtitles) per week (in
the eight-week class format). No language or coursework prerequisites.
Take-home midterm and final, quizzes, and class discussions.
