An introduction to vocabulary and critical methods useful for understanding and discussing
literary texts. During the first two-thirds of the semester, interpretative terms and methods will
be defined and illustrated primarily by studying poems from various historical periods that
exemplify a variety of forms, styles, and human concerns; and secondarily by examining a
handful of short stories. These methods and terms will then be applied to two or three longer
works, including a play by Shakespeare and a twentieth-century novel. Several writing
assignments of various lengths, including in-class quizzes and formal papers; a comprehensive
final examination.
