COAS INTENSIVE WRITING SECTION

OPEN TO MAJORS ONLY. DECLARED MINORS OBTAIN AUTHORIZATION IN BH402

This L202 will be organized around the theme of "crime and punishment." We'll read
some of the works of the theorist Michel Foucault, and then think through some of his ideas as
we read texts by Kafka (IN THE PENAL COLONY), Dostoevsky (CRIME AND
PUNISHMENT), Poe (THE MYSTERY OF MARIE ROGET), as well as contemporary works
such as SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. We'll also be viewing a few films, among them DEAD
MAN WALKING, IN COLD BLOOD, and Hitchcock's ROPE.

Students should keep Wednesday evenings free (7-9 pm) for film viewing.

Since this is an intensive writing course, there will be five papers of varying lengths required, as
well as a reading journal and a group presentation.
