COAS INTENSIVE WRITING SECTION

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the art of poetry. To that end, students will
learn and practice strategies for reading and studying poetry that represents a wide range of
historical periods and a variety of literary conventions and techniques as they strive toward
developing a greater understanding and appreciation of the art. Because much of the work of this
course will be carried on through class discussion and other class activities, regular attendance
and participation will be required. At the same time, because this section has been designated as
"writing intensive," students may expect to receive instruction in and opportunities to practice
strategies for writing about poetry and so will be asked to submit over the course of the semester
four or five critical papers (totaling, roughly, about 5,000 words), a midterm, a final exam,
and a number of quizzes.
