We shall read 13-14 of Shakespeare's major plays, covering the playwright's whole career.
Two lectures and one discussion section each week. Since there will be a great deal of emphasis
on the continuity between plays and upon the way Shakespeare continually reworks earlier
structures and rethinks earlier ideas, regular attendance at lectures and discussions will be
particularly important, in fact, necessary. Two hour examinations, two essays, brief weekly
in-class writing exercises (i.e., quizzes), and a final examination. Students will be expected to
have some memory at the end of the course of plays they read at the beginning and thus should
probably plan on reading each of the assigned plays twice. Text will be The Riverside
Shakespeare; it's heavy and expensive, but will impress friends and acquaintances greatly.
