In this course we will read science fiction works on a variety of themes, such as time travel,
space exploration, environmental or economic crisis, reproductive technologies. We'll read
fiction by writers such as H.G. Wells, William Gibson, Octavia Butler, Kim Stanley Robinson,
Pamela Sargent, Ursula Le Guin, Joanna Russ and others. We'll also view several films, such as
(possibly) BLADE RUNNER, SILENT RUNNING, 2001, and the occasional episode of STAR
TREK.
Students enrolling for the course should keep Wednesday evenings free for film viewing (7-9
pm).
There will be three papers of varying lengths, a take-home final, and a group presentation
required.
