This course surveys major English works and authors from Anglo-Saxon times to the
Elizabethan Age.  Readings will include BEOWULF, SIR GAWAIN AND THE GREEN
KNIGHT, some Middle English drama, and works by Chaucer, Sidney, Spenser, Marlowe, and
Shakespeare, among others. There will also be some critical essays to read, illustrating various
approaches to the analysis of texts.  The format of the course will combine lectures with
opportunities for discussion, and written requirements will include three essays, some quizzes, a
