L298 is a headlong survey of major writers, works, literary forms and themes from the early 17th
century to the late eighteenth century. We'll look at a variety of genres -- drama, epic, lyric,
satire (in both verse and prose), essay, and novel -- by a wide range of authors: most notably,
Shakespeare, Donne, Ben Jonson, Herbert, Milton, Dryden, Congreve, Defoe, Swift, Pope, and
Samuel Johnson.
The main text will be the NORTON ANTHOLOGY OF LITERATURE, VOL. 1. Classes will
be a mixture of lecture and discussion; participation will be weighed in the final grade.
Requirements include three short (4-page) essays, a midterm and a final.
