Rapid survey of major British authors (excluding novelists) of the Romantic, Victorian and
Modern periods, with attention to both individual styles and sensibilities and to larger literary
and cultural contexts and dis/continuities.  Ca. 100 pp of reading per week, including a good deal
of poetry, in THE NORTON ANTHOLOGY OF ENGLISH LITERATURE, VOL. II, 6th ed.
Two mid-terms and a final exam and two or three short papers/exercises.  Informal lectures and
discussion.  Regular attendance is required.  Completion of, or concurrent enrollment in, L202 or
equivalent is recommended.
