This survey will cover major literary works of the Romantic, Victorian, Modern and
contemporary periods and discuss them in their cultural context. "English literature" will include
not only literature written in England, but also important work written in English by colonials
and post-colonials in, for example, Ireland, India and the Caribbean. Issues such as reform,
abolition, war, public education, imperialism, and the role of women will be reflected through
various literary and cultural movements. Throughout the course we will read a considerable
amount of nineteenth and twentieth-century poetry, a couple of novels and short stories and some
non-fiction prose. But students will also be asked to make discoveries of their own through group
research projects, using the library and the rare book collection. Students will write several short
papers and take two tests in the course of the semester.
