This course will study the Victorian novel, focusing in particular on the means by which
novels tested conventional ideas about education. In doing so, we will raise questions about the
central themes of these books as well as generic questions about the nature of romance and
realism. Novels we will read will likely include Charlotte Bronte's JANE EYRE, George Eliot's
MIDDLEMARCH, Jane Austen's PERSUASION or EMMA, Charles Dickens' GREAT
EXPECTATIONS, Henry James' PORTRAIT OF A LADY, and George Gissing's THE ODD
WOMEN. Students will be required to shape class discussion, write two papers, and take a final
examination.
