This course will examine the phenomenon of literary modernism in early 20th century
transatlantic literature in relation to social and artistic movements. We will look not only at the
work and relationships among such authors as Woolf, Forster, Waugh, Joyce, Lawrence, Barnes,
Stein, Eliot, Hemingway, Faulkner, and Fitzgerald, but also at various formulations of
modernism and its relation to avant-garde movements. Writing assignments will include several
shorter papers and one research project.
