Topic: "The Story of Troy"

This course will explore the literary story of the fall of Troy, beginning with (sections
from) Homer's ILIAD, some Greek dramas, and Virgil's AENEID. From there we'll do some
reading in the medieval tradition, possibly Chaucer's TROILUS AND CRISEYDE (in the
original Middle English). We'll look at Shakespeare's version of the story in TROILUS AND
CRESSIDA, and then spend some time on Heinrich Schliemann's Troy excavations in the
nineteenth century. We'll end with Christa Wolf's CASSANDRA, a retelling of the saga from a
feminist perspective. Students will write three papers of varying lengths, a midterm and a
comprehensive final.
