TITLE: FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION? LANGUAGE AND IDENTITY IN AMERICA
MWF 12:20-1:10 WH 006
Does the language you use enable you to express who you are? What is
the relationship between language and identity? How is this
relationship affected by recent debates on freedom of expression and
political correctness? This course is designed to work through these
questions of communication and cultural difference, paying particular
attention to how language constructs and reflects identity, both inside
and outside the university. To consider these questions within a
broader cultural context, we will begin with a discussion of political
correctness and multiculturalism and then move into analyses of identity
formation, focusing our exploration on ethnicity and gender.
