TITLE: REPRESENTING AMERICANS IN AN AGE OF DIVERSITY
TR 9:30-10:45 JHA107
"Representing Americans" is a course that investigates the difficulty
and value of representing a national identity in an age when we have
become conscious of the many differences among the peoples who live in
the United States. This course will raise an interrelated series of
questions around the issue of national identity: What is an American?
Who gets to decide who an American is? How are Americans represented in
contemporary culture? Why should we pay attention to how culture
represents us? Should we or can we define what it means to be an
American? In addition to these larger questions, this course will also
encourage students to consider their own identities in relation to
competing attempts to define a national identity.
