REQUIRES PERMISSION OF INSTRUCTOR

SECTION AUTHORIZATIONS AVAILABLE IN BH402.

PREREQUISITE: 6 CREDIT HOURS IN W203 AND W301 AND PERMISSION OF
INSTRUCTOR.

Students should submit in a manila envelope 15-20 pages (no more, no less) of their best fiction,
along with a cover sheet listing their previous creative writing classes, names of instructors, and
any other pertinent biographical information, to my mailbox in BH 442 at least several days
before registration. It is to your advantage to submit your work as soon as possible, since places
will be filled as students apply. No places can be saved for late registration.
Please include your e-mail address on your cover sheet. If you are admitted, I will contact
you so you may immediately pick up from the secretary in BH 402 an authorization to register to
secure your place in the class.

W401 is an advanced fiction writing course, and students will be evaluated on both quantity
(about 45 pages of stories) and quality of new creative work (revisions will count a lot). Course
requirements will include the reading and discussion of assigned contemporary fiction, and
scheduled intensive workshops (including written critiques by students of student work).
Strongly suggested pre-course reading: Janet Burroway, WRITING FICTION, John Gardner,
THE ART OF FICTION, THE NORTON ANTHOLOGY OF SHORT FICTION.
