A critical investigation of the origins and development of the first four centuries of Christian
art, from ca. 180 to 565 A.D.  Various issues and themes will be investigated: the first images of
Jesus Christ and his mother Mary as well as the apostles; the emergence of sacred places of
worship in their urban or rural setting; how cities changed in the period under consideration, with
particular attention to Rome, Milan, Constantinople, and Thessaloniki in Greece; the features of
pilgrimage shrines in Rome, Egypt, and Syria; the development of major artistic
media such as mosaics and ivory carving.
Two midterms, paper, and final exam.
