West European Studies | Geography of Western Europe
W405 | 4196 | Knudsen

The purpose of this course is to acquaint you with the geography of
Western Europe, although we will spend time talking about those portions
of Eastern Europe that are expected to join the EU around the year 2000
as well. The course is divided into three areas: background material,
systematic material, and regional material. The first portion provides
the physical and historical background to present-day Europe. The second
portion provides a discussion of the topics that all of Europe faces,
while the last portion discusses Europe in a country-by-country fashion.

The course text is: James R. McDonald (1992), "The European Scene: A
Geographical Perspective." Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Prentice-Hall. In
addition there are reserve readings that fill in the gaps in your
textbook. Additional reserved reading may be assigned as we progress
through the semester-covering Europe in one semester is no small task!

Your grade in this class is comprised of two exams, a final exam, a paper
and a presentation. In written assignments, spelling and grammar always
count. The topic of your paper should be cleared by the instructor. The
first two exams account for 20 points, the paper and final exam account
for 25 points each, and the presentation accounts for 10 points of the
total 100 points in the course.
