About the Instructor

This course offers an overview of the postwar history of Hungary and an interpretation of the present situation in this East-Central European country. It is open to undergraduates as well as graduates.

At the outset the transitional multiparty system and the gradual communist takeover (1945-1948) are considered. This is followed by a survey of the totalitarian Stalinist dictatorship (1949-1956) including the reform course of Imre Nagy. Particular emphasis is placed on the events and interpretations of the revolution and war of independence of 1956. In the second third of the course the political history, economy, society and cultural life of the Kádár era, called "goulash communism," are analyzed. At the end of the semester we survey the increasing tensions in the 1980s, the collapse of communism in 1989-1990, and the first experiences of Hungarians with the newly established market economy and parliamentary democracy in 1990-1996.
