Post-Yuan Politics in Mongolia
About the
Instructor
This survey deals with the Inner Asian world after the Mongol Conquest of the 13th century.
Although the focus of the course is on the Mongolian homeland (Greater Mongolia), it follows
certain historical developments among the Mongol peoples beyond the frontiers of Mongolia
proper. The course begins with the fall of the Mongol Yuan dynasty in 1368 and traces the
recession of the imperial house to the Mongol steppe. Focus is given to the geography of
Mongolia; the original culture of the steppe; the adaptations made to outside influences; the rise
of feudal society; the arrival of Buddhism; the impact of Russian and Manchu invasions; and,
finally, to Mongolia under Manchu rule. The text for the course will be An Introduction to
Mongolian History and Culture, available at Kinko's.
Course Requirements: Term Paper and discussion group.
Days and Time: Arranged.
