Chaghatay

About the Instructor


The purpose of the course is to give a basic knowledge of Chaghatay -- the classical version of Uzbek and the common literary language of all Central Asian Turks from the 15th to the early 20th century. The course includes a survey of Chaghatay grammar and writing system which is given together with the reading of samples from Chaghatay texts, mainly of historical content.

Textbook: Eckmann, Chagatay Manual, The Hague: Mouton, 1966 (Indiana University Publications, Uralic and Altaic Series, Vol. 60).

Texts and Readings: Class handouts. (The sources for the handouts: the printed texts of the following: Babur, Babur-namah; 'Abd Allah Nasrallahi, Zubdat alathar; Abu'l-Ghazi, Shajara-i Tarakima; Abu'l-Ghazi, Shajara-i Turk; Munis, Firdaws al-iqbal.)

Prerequisites: Knowledge of one modern Turkic language is required (U453-U454 may satisfy this requirement; otherwise instructor's permission in necessary). An acquaintance with Persian is desirable.

Grades: Grades will be based on class performance.

Days and Time: Thursday, 4:00-6:00.
