Politics and Society in Central Asia

Instructor
This course is an introduction to Central Asia, in particular those areas which emerged from the
Soviet Union. The course includes a historical review of the entire Soviet period, but the majority
of the course focuses on the 1980s and beyond. Among the topics covered are the politics, social
problems, and economy of the region; other subjects include demographic problems, Islam, the
role of women, and foreign policy. The format of the course is primarily lecture, with three essay
exams.
Days and Time: Tuesday and Thursday, 11:15-12:30.
