About the Instructor


The course is intended to familiarize students with all types of sources used for the study of the history of Central Asia during the Islamic period, with special emphasis on written sources, both in indigenous and European languages, and to acquaint them with the ways in which different types of sources should be used in the study of Central Asian history.

Prerequisites: A course in Central Asian history (U493 or U496) and a reading knowledge of at least one European research language (other than English), or permission of the instructor.

Readings: Will be provided by the beginning of semester (in English and supplementary languages).

Examinations: Student must complete a comprehensive final examination that may require some research in the library; the questions will be given on the last day of classes, and the answers should be submitted by the end of the final examination period.

Days and Time: Tuesday and Thursday, 2:30-3:45.
