This course will deal with the persistent hold that fairy tales exercise upon our imaginations. From Ovid through the Grimm Brothers to Walt Disney, we will explore stories of magical transformations, sleeping beauties, and wolves on the prowl. Texts will include postmodern revisions of such classic fairy tales as Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Hansel and Gretel, and Little Red Riding Hood in both literature and film. Texts will be drawn from a variety of national literatures. There will be a mid-term and a final exam, as well as quizzes on individual works.
