| God and Religion in Central Eurasia
E103 | 0093 | Walter
This course introduces basic concepts about several religions found in
Central Eurasia, including Christianity, Buddhism, and "Shamanism", focusing
on their concepts of spiritual beings. Emphasis is placed on common
elements and themes, and how some old religious conceptions from this area
are still present in our own thinking about God and religion. These are
ancient ideas we share with many, if not all, Europeans as well as many
Asian peoples. Wouldn't you like to know why we view God as we do, and like
to know how different other peoples' ideas of God and religion can be?
Instead of tests, you will be evaluated by a series of short theme papers
due every two weeks. Emphasis will be on your own analysis, clear thinking
and problem solving. You will have the opportunity to express yourself and
show what you can do with an interesting and challenging topic!
