| Voices from Africa: History in Novels, Films, & Memoirs
E104 | 0140 | Hanson
Have you ever watched a film or read a novel about Africa and wondered
whether it told the "real story"? In this course we explore films, novels
and memoirs by and/or about Africans and discuss how historians attempt to
uncover the "real story" about the African past.
Among the works analyzed are: the films Amistad and Roots, the novels
Things Fall Apart and Chaka, the memoirs of Olaudah Equiano and several
African oral traditions.
The final course grade is determined by the quality of work in two exams,
several short writing assignments and class participation
