Topic: ARE WE STILL HUMAN? DEFINING OURSELVES IN A SUPER- TECHNOLOGICAL AGE
In this course, we will examine the ways in which humans define and
represent themselves, and what is at stake in maintaining these definitions.
Recent scientific advances--particularly in biotechnology and artificial
intelligence--are changing the ways we think about ourselves as
humans. Through reading, writing, and discussion, we will study,
interrogate, compare, and contrast definitions of humanity from the Romantic
period to the cyborg age, from Mary Shelley's Frankenstein to Chris Carter's
X-Files, in an attempt to determine who we are--or at least, who we think we
are.
