The aim of this creative writing workshop is to enable students to
learn to write literary (as opposed to genre-based) fiction. The
course will provide students with a critical and supportive audience
as they develop a sound critical sense about the techniques that
make up fiction. In addition to submitting at least 40-45 pages of
original fiction over the semester as well as complete a series of
exercises, students will read, critique, and discuss the course texts
and each other's creative work. The class will discuss working
habits and the creative writing process, examine several examples
of contemporary fiction, and learn relevant aspects of fictional craft
and technique.

Students interested in this class should submit 15-20 pages of
fiction along with a list of their previous creative writing classes
and any other pertinent biographical information to my mailbox in
BH 442 at least several days before registration. A list of accepted
students will be posted on my office door (BH 529), and I will give
a copy of the list to the Undergraduate Secretary in BH402. As
soon as you are admitted, contact the Undergraduate Secretary for
an on-line authorization.
