This course will center around reading a variety of texts and
writers in order to examine the techniques which are used to
develop character, setting, plot, time, imagary, etc. We will read
narratives which deal with identity thematically and formally.
Readings will include works by Tomas Rivera, Flannery O'Conner,
Toni Morrison, Sandra Cisneros, Diego Velasquez, Jack Kerouac,
David Sedaris, Tobias Wolfe, Diane Di Prima, and others. Students
will work in a workshop-like atmosphere in which they will be
expected to respond through a combination of position papers,
discussion, and creative writing exercises. The final project will be
an original short story utilizing the techniques and methods
investigated during the semester.
