This is the senior-level poetry writing course in the English
department which is run as a workshop. That is to say, everyone
will be asked to submit a new or rewritten poem in 12 of the 14
weeks, as well as a three-to-four page paper on a book of
contemporary poetry (see below) and another short paper on a
currently active poetry magazine. All of this will culminate at the
end of the semester in a portfolio of what each student feels are
his/her ten best poems of the semester.

The FIVE texts for the course will be taken from the following list:
John Ashbery, WAKEFULNESS: POEMS
Elaine Equi, SURFACE TENSION
Albert Goldbarth, ADVENTURES IN ANCIENT EGYPT
Jorie Graham, THE ERRANCY
Barbara Guest, SELECTED POEMS
Robert Hass, SUN UNDER WOOD
Brenda Hillman, LOOSE SUGAR
Mark Jarman, QUESTIONS FOR ECCLESIASTES
Brigit Kelly, SONG
Ann Lauterbach, ON A STAIR
Bin Ramke, MASSACRE OF THE INNOCENTS
James Tate, SHROUD OF THE GNOME

Those interested in applying should put five pages of poetry in my
box in Ballantine 442. Please indicate what other Creative Writing
courses you've taken, and be sure to leave me your e-mail address,
phone number, or another way to get in touch with you. After you
have been approved, contact the Undergraduate Secretary in
BH402 for an on-line authorization.
