Topic: Mosaics in Ancient and Medieval Monuments
Only undergraduates can sign up for section 1996. Graduates
wanting to take the course must obtain written authorization from
the instructor and take the course as A495 (4 cr.).
Authorization forms are available in the departmental office.
This new course will probe the exploitation of the technique
of glass mosaic to transform the floors, walls, vaults, and domes
of buildings in the Middle Ages from the fourth to the fourteenth
century. The focus will be upon examples in Milan, Ravenna,
Rome, Naples, Sicily, Thessaloniki, Constantinople, Cyprus,
Syria, Lebanon, and Israel. Carolingian mosaics will be
investigated as well. While changes and peculiarities of
technique will be observed, the thrust of the course will be
placed on the inherent programmatic character of the visual
discourse. Readings, written assignments, an oral presentation.
