Folklore
| AMERICAN VERNACULAR MUSIC
F527 | 2205 | Burdette
(Meets with F625) This course will bridge the work of folklore and
ethnomusicology as we examine music-making in North America regionally.
We will study the stylistic trajectories of these musics and explore the
development of new syncretic styles as these regional musics met with mass
mediums of distribution. We will also discuss issues of ethnicity,
community, style, genre, and revival. Some of the regionally inflected
genres we will examine include string band music, bluegrass, blues, polka,
shape-note singing, Cajun, zydeco and Tex-Mex.
