An introduction of the techniques of playing the Karimba /Nyunganyunga
mbira of Zimbabwe. Topics will include the exposure to various types of
mbira instruments found in Zimbabwe. Playing of the Nyunganyunga type
will be done step-by-step following the model structure of the related
repertoire. The role of mbira music in the Shona culture will also be
discussed in general. Topics on Mbira music and spirituality among the
Shona people will also be covered in detail. This course will also cover
the aural aspects of the performance in which the student is expected to
listen and make a textural analysis of the music.
Musical literacy background will be an advantage but not a prerequisite.
Students will, however, need to have a background in either of the
following areas: folklore, ethnomusicology, African studies, musicology,
or music education. Students will be required to purchase their own mbira
from the Folklore Institute and must be prepared to set aside at least one
hour a day for practice. Aural skills from a musical background or any of
the above areas will be an added advantage.
