(Meets with F351 & F540) The landscape is a vast, intricate construction,
the resource for a more democratic history. Centered upon the American
home, this course, heavily illustrated with slides, will demonstrate how
material culture can be analyzed to provide a broader, richer account of
the human past. While reaching out for cross-cultural comparisons, the
course will concentrate on the European-American architectural tradition
of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, with particular attention to
regional formation, national convergence and conflict. Readings will be
drawn from the abundant literature on vernacular architecture. There will
be a major project which can be either bibliographic or based upon field
research.
