The aim of this course is to acquaint the students with the most
important Italian novels of the 19th century seen within the
framework of European literature and in their relationship with
the Risorgimento. A general introduction to the main trends of
the Italian novel will be followed by detailed lectures on
representative works. The masterpieces of Manzoni, Verga,
Fogazzaro, Capuana, Deledda and De Roberto will be studied.
Students will be assigned specific chapters, themes and issues
for reporting and discussion in class. The instructor will
provide a limited but comprehensive bibliographical list.
Students will be required to write a research paper on a topic
agreed upon in consultation with the instructor.
