French And Italian | Lectures et analyses littéraires: Honors
S300 | 2278 | Mac Phail

This course is our introduction to the study of French
literature. We will read and discuss literary texts of different
genres and different periods in order to develop our critical
faculties and our language skills. We will begin with a
selection of lyric poems from the Ansart anthology, and each
student will present a brief exposé and compose a short
essay on a poem chosen from our anthology. Then we will study
Molière's comedy L'Ecole des femmes and take a
test on the play. In the second half of the semester we will
study Guy de Maupassant's collection of short stories La
maison Tellier and Voltaire's novel, or conte
philosophique, Candide. Students will make a
presentation in class and write an essay on a story of their
choice by Maupassant, and the final exam will cover Voltaire.
The entire course will be conducted in honors French, which is
just like regular French except you can't leave out the accents.
