Topic: Deutsche Reisen

Three credit hour course; meets 12:20-1:10 p.m., MWF in BH 305.

Prerequisite: G300 with a minimum grade of C-. Recommended: G330.

In this course we will focus on actual as well as fictional travel accounts
written by German writers over the last one hundred years or so. We will look
at representative text from Wilhelminian Germany, Weimar, and the third Reich.
The questions we will explore concern the literary (different genres of the
Reisebericht, the Feuilleton article, and Abenteuerroman) and political
framework as it influences, or is determined by, the construction of the
encounter between cultures. Readings will include texts by Kafka, Scheurmann,
Kisch, Tucholsky, and A.E. Johann.

All readings and discussions will be in German. Students will write three
short essays in German during the semester.
