Topic: Culture and the Structure of Consciousness

Three credit hour course; meets 4:00-5:15 p.m., MW in BH 205.

This course deals with the interaction of ideas and literature in German
culture, with primary emphasis on the period 1870-1924. Themes to be discussed
include «Repression, the Artist, and Society»; «Punishment
and Power»; «Guilt, Dream, and Literary Narrative»; and
«Culture and the Crisis of Language». Readings include selections
from: Ovid's METAMORPHOSES, Schopenhauer's DIE WELT ALS WILLE UND VORSTELLUNG,
Grimm's KINDER- UND HAUSMÄRCHEN, Nietzsche's DIE GEBURT DER TRAGÖDIE
and ZUR GENEALOGIE DER MORAL, Freud's DIE TRAUMDEUTUNG and EINFÜHRUNG IN
DIE PSYCHOANALYSE, Wittgenstein's LOGISCHE-PHILOSOPHISCHE ABHANDLUNGEN,
Kafka's «EIN BRUDERMORD», DAS URTEIL, IN DER STRAFKOLONIE, and DIE
VERWANDLUNG, Thomas Mann's TONIO KRÖGER and DER TOD IN VENEDIG, and
Musil's DIE VERWIRRUNGEN DES ZÖGLINGS TÖRLESS.
