This course surveys Native American history focusing primarily on tribes
living west of the Mississippi River.  The course briefly explores Native
American relations with the Spaniards and then concentrates on the period
from the mid- nineteenth century to the present.  Several texts will be
assigned, usually 5 or 6.  The course will consist mainly of lectures, but
students will be given numerous opportunities to engage in classroom
discussion.  Some audio-visual materials will be incorporated.  Students
will be required to write 2 formal papers, and there will be a midterm
exam and a final exam, each of which will be composed of multiple-choice
questions and short essay questions.
