This course will provide an overview of the discipline of history by
focusing on a series of topics that have recently generated debate.
Themes addressed will include the similarities and differences as well as
overlaps between history and various social science disciplines; the
challenges to conventional forms of history posed by class, and community.
To prepare for the first class meeting, all interested students should
read Appleby, Hunt and Jacob's Telling the Truth About History (Norton,
1994), and come to class ready to discuss the book's main arguments.
