Topic: U. S. Foreign Relations

A portion of the above section reserved for majors

The seminar is designed to help graduate students write an original
research paper on the history of US foreign relations. American politics,
economy, and society all seem to operate without much respect for the
territorial boundaries of the United States, and this course deals with
all of the history Americans make outside of the fifty states. In
addition to diplomacy, we will cover migration, missionaries, overseas
business, international organizations, international environmental issues
, and the relationships between foreign policy and domestic social
movements. Emphasis will be placed on the techniques of writing and
researching history. Students will learn approaches used by historians,
how to research in primary sources and government documents, and how to
organize an essay suitable for publication. Students should choose a
research topic and consult with the professor prior to the first class
meeting.
