The course deals with the history of the Soviet secret police and the
roles it played in the internal and external politics of the Soviet Union.
The focus is on the Soviet case, but students are encouraged to compare
the Soviet secret police with the political police and intelligence organs
in other countries (CIA, MI5/MI6, the Stasi, etc).  Readings include
Andrew and Gordievsky, KGB, and Sudoplatov, Special Task.  Requirements
include a final research paper (c. 15 pages).
