PREREQUISITES:
Previous dance training or permission of the instructor
CLASS MEETING:
One fifty minute period two time per week
ATTENDANCE:
Students are allowed a maximum of three (3) absences. Upon a fourth absence
the student has
three (3) options:
1. receive a grade of F;
2. officially withdraw from the course;
3. follow an appeal procedure through your instructor and/or the Elective
Program Coordinator.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
A continuation of instruction in the modern jazz style of movement, with
special emphasis on
movement precision, clarity, and performance style.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
At the conclusion of the course, the student should be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of proper alignment, through the application
of body mechanics
necessary to achieve balance and centering, during movement and at rest;
2. Demonstrate performance mastery of at least four intermediate level jazz
combinations;
3. Demonstrate improved clarity, precision, and musicality;
4. Show stylistic differences (blues, rock, funk, etc.) through the
performance of the
aforementioned movement combinations.
COURSE TOPICS INCLUDE:
1. Review of locomotor terminology
2. Additional jazz steps
3. Ballet for jazz dance
4. Weight transfers
5. Technique styles/movement analysis
6. Movement combinations
7. Dance films/videos

EXAMS: Four performance exams
ASSIGNMENTS:
1. Concert critiques
2. Personal technique analysis/summary papers
GRADING:
1. Four performance exams = 100 points
2. Two concert critiques = 20 points
3. Technique analysis/summary tapes = 10 points
TOTAL COURSE POINTS = 130 points
92% - 100% = A's
83% - 91% = B's
74% - 82% = C's
65% - 73% = D's
