This course is a survey of ancient and classical literatures of India in
translation, presented in
cultural context. Students will read selections from such works as Rig
Veda, the epic lecture
Mahabharata, popular stories, drama, and poetry. Class format is with
open discussion,
supplemented with occasional films (including one mandatory all-day
Saturday showing of Peter
Brooks Mahabharata) to enhance comprehension of the texts and their
cultural milieu.
