Survey of the institutions, processes, and effects of journalism and mass
communication, with emphasis on the influence of mass media on American
society.  Goals: To help students -- 1)  Understand how and why the mass
media are structured and financed as they are, what their functions and
practices are, what effects they have on society, and how they are
regulated; 2)  Develop and improve analytical skills through reading and
discussing mass media issues; 3)  Become professional journalists,
advertising and/or public relations Specialists; and 4)  Be more informed
users and critics of mass media.
