This course is a general introduction to the study of human language. The
first part of the course focuses on the core areas of language study:
morphology (or word structure), syntax, semantics, phonetics and phonology.
In this part of the course you will become familiar with the basics of how
to analyze languages from a linguistic perspective. This will serve as
necessary background for the second part of the course which will focus on
a variety of language-related topics. Such topics include the issue of
different dialects including an evaluation of the controversy over Ebonics
(or African-American Vernacular English), language and gender, American Sign
Language, language acquisition, and language and the brain. By the end
of the course you should be acquainted with the basics of linguistic
analysis, be aware of the fundamental similarities of all human languages
as well as their differences, and have an informed perspective on issues of
language that have an impact on our society.
